The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a small European breed intended for egg production. It is not an APA-approved breed. This breed, often known as Spitzhaubens, lays white shelled eggs and has white skin. This breed has only recently begun to take its breeding and preservation more seriously. This breed is acknowledged by societies in the U.k. and numerous European nations, but not by the American Poultry Association (APA) in the U.S. However, efforts are being made to standardize them, and a breed society has been founded to help with this. There are various variants of this breed, but the Silver Spangled has the most fans and is the most prevalent.
Appenzeller Spitzhauben Origin
The Spitzhaubens' early record is not fully known. They are generally thought to have originated in the Swiss canton of Appenzell. Since the 16th century, Spitzhaubens, or bird species closely related to them, have been observed in this territory. They are thought to have been developed through cross-breedings of the Dutch breed Brabanter, Crevecoeurs, and La Fleche. Primarily, the Spitzhauben were retained in monasteries, where they were regarded as a sturdy foraging breed capable of laying a sufficient number of eggs.
Initially, only these monasteries retained them, but the breed ultimately found its path into the hands of local farmers. For several years, the breed was never seen outside of Switzerland, and as a result, its population had decreased to the point where only a handful survived. None were seen outside of their native land until the 1800s and early 1900s. When this began to occur, it aided the breed by growing its numbers, and the breed's population increased steadily.
Appenzeller Spitzhauben Temperament
The Spitzhauben has a lively temperament and can be a bit headstrong. These characteristics, on the other hand, are what make it a superb foraging variety. To keep this breed confined, a tall fence or a covering is required to keep them from flying out. If you don't want to exhibit your birds, you can clip their wings to keep them disciplined. However, this makes them more susceptible to carnivores that may find their way into the fence.
Appenzeller Spitzhauben Characteristics
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben chicken is a stunning breed of chicken. It has a wide tail, a full hackle, and plumage that is pretty firm and compact. It comprises a spherical body with a well-balanced crest that is tilted forward over the face.
The comb of Appenzeller Spitzhauben chickens is v-shaped, with no side sprigs. Their eyes are dark brownish and their noses are big. There are no beards or muffs on this variety. Their skin is white and their limbs are blue/slate.
Appenzeller Spitzhauben Eggs Production
Even though the eggs produced by Appenzeller Spitzhauben hens are not particularly large for such breed of chicken, the hens do not fall short in the laying egg. In 1 week, a single hen can lay approximately 3-5 eggs.
